Embedded Heat Pipes

Heat Pipe Assembly

Heat pipes offer very high thermal conductivity in their longitudinal directions. Depending on the lengths and manufacturing factors, the effective thermal conductivity of heat pipes can be 10 to 10,000 times the thermal conductivity of pure copper. When coupled with highly conductive copper or aluminum fins, heat pipes become a powerful device that can move a large of amount of heat from its source to a much larger or more convenient location and dissipate it to the air.

Assembly of Heat Pipes and Fins

Skived heat sinks are manufactured by peeling fins from a bar of solid copper or aluminum, using a sharp and accurately controlled blade tool. The tool shaves a small thickness of the material, lifts it up and bends it vertically to form the fin. The final heat sink can be machined using normal fabrication techniques, such as CNC machining. Skived heat sinks require minimal tooling cost, which makes it a cost effective solution. Skived heat sinks can also be customized with embedded heat pipes to further improve performance.

Thermal Design and Analysis of Heat Pipes

Heat Pipe Assembly

Direct simulation of a heat pipe is difficult due to the complex structure and physics inside the pipe. Most thermal engineers have found it , and we would also recommend, using effective thermal conductivity to model the solid heat pipe.
